The aim of the research work is to investigate  the impact of truancy among secondary school students. A desscriptive survey was used  and   questionnaire titled “Students Truancy Attitude (STA)”   was  constructed as research instrument  which sampled 115  teachers in Lagos State Education District 1, Agege that  responded to a total of 26 items questionnaire .

The factors responsible for truancy with 10 items question, the effect of truancy  with 9 items question and remedies to challenges of truancy  with 7 items question were investigated.

The findings of the researchrevealed thae factors that were responsible for truancy which include: Most students  are  engage learning tradework alongside with schooling which they do after school and most time prevent them from coming to school,  ,decline of interest in education by the students, parents’ negative attitude towards education, Fear of been punished whenever they violate school rules, too much manual labour in school, Inability to get transport fare  to school most of the time, peer group influence.

It is therefore recommended that each school should have a functioning disciplinary committee that sees to every cases of acts of truancy of the students and which should be headed by a trained guidance counsellor.

Background to the Study

Education can be defined as the transmission of the values and accumulation of knowledge of a society; it is designed to guide students in learning a culture, moulding behaviour in the ways of adulthood, and directing them toward eventual role in society. Education is there to help people become useful members of the society, should also help them to develop an appreciation of their cultural heritage and live more satisfying lives.

 (Tiberius P. M& Natalia,K 2014)

In recent times, education has been recognized globally as one of the universal ways of survival and improvement of the well-being of individuals and society. The advent of formal education is considered as the foundation for national development as well as the surest way of making of all long life achievements. Consequently no nation, government, organization or family makes effective impact and lasting successes in their daily affairs without having educated citizens, officers, workers who had clearer understanding of their obligations, functions or responsibilities, observe the laws, apply policies and co-operate in its affairs.

As important as education is to all and sundry  in which secondary school education is a crucial aspect of it, many setback has bewildered the education system especially from secondary school level which is an unlawful act display by the students: this is an act of truancy.

Reid(2003)listed truancy as the greatest predictor of juvenile and adult crimes and of psychiatric problems. Reid further suggests that two thirds of offenders begin their criminal activities while truanting, he further said that truancy can leads to criminality or social alienation. Maynard (2006) observes that the implications of non  school attendance become more worrying when concern is drawn to instances of truancy leading to delinquency, social disorder and education failure.

According to Rayner and Riding (1996) truancy,  other difficulties in adult life which can be linked to truancy include: The inability to settle into routine work and or marriage frequent job changes, isolationism, pathological disorders, poverty, higher, separation and divorce rates, living upon income support,  illiteracy, depression, temper tantrums and involvement with social workers and social services.

Truancy is one of the major antisocial discipline problems among secondary school students in Nigeria. The concept and acts of indiscipline have received a lot of attention by researchers. Peck opined that the various behavioural disorders like stealing, violence, drug abuse, examination malpractice, sexual abuse and truancy have so undermined effective teaching-learning processes that some teachers have become helpless and disorganized in their task of impacting knowledge to the learners.

Truancy among students has become a growing problem. It is the act of deliberately missing one or more classes. Globally, truancy has been regarded as a cankerworm that has eaten deep into the fabrics of the educational programmes and has caused a lot of setbacks for secondary school students in their educational pursuits (Stoll,1993; Gesinde,2004; Adeyemi,2006; Animasahun,2007b). It leads to potential delinquent activity, social isolation, or educational failure via suspension, expulsion, or dropping out (Huizinga, Loeber,Thornberry&Cothern,2000;Huizinga,Loeber&Thornberry,1994;Morris,Ehren & Lenz,1991).

According to Peninsky (2000), when a child is a truant, it implies that he has been constantly absent from school for so many days, weeks or even months. Truancy, he further explains is a deliberate absence from school no medical or justifiable reason, with or without parental knowledge. Peninsky’s explanation of truancy agrees very well with the definition given in Collin’s English dictionary in which a truant is described

as ones absent from duty without leave especially children who absent

themselves from school. Nwana (2004) also explained truancy to include

intentionally absenting of oneself from school without permission, leaving

without authorization and dodging of specific lesson periods.

    1.2   Statement of Problem

Antisocial behaviour, academic underachievement, and poor development of pro-social skills among students attending most of our nation's public schools remain a concern for educators, parents, and the lay public The problem of truancy in schools has persisted over the years. These acts have either been carried out individually by the students or as a group which result to rioting or revolts. Student’s non-attendance to classes is a persistence problem that extends much further than the school. It affects the students, the family and the society on very high levels. Globally, truancy has been identified as the most powerful predictor of delinquency and indiscipline among youths. There is no doubt that students’ truancy attitude generally militates against effective teaching and learning and production of useful acceptable members of the society.

1.3         Purpose of Study

The aim of this study is to ascertain the causes and levels of truancy among secondary school students. The areas covered in this study are as follows:

i) Examine the student’s causes and levels of truancy among secondary school students.

ii) Examine the  predictor factors that can influence truancy among secondary school students.

iii)  The problems that are associated with truancy in the present and future.

iv) Proffer reasonable solutions to the challenges of truancy among secondary school.

1.4  Research Questions

Attempt will be made to proffer convincing solution to the following questions below:

a)    What are the factors contributing to truancy among secondary school students?

b)    To what extends will family background contribute to the  challenge of truancy among secondary school students?

c)     To what extent will students and school system contribute to the challenge of truancy among secondary school students?

d)    To what extent do the problems associated with truancy  affect academic  performance of students?

1.5  Significance of the Study

It will expose the behaviours of parents, teachers and society exhibit that influence the students’ truancy.. The study will also be of immense value to graduate and undergraduate students who are studying administration in the field of education as it will give them an insight on how to handle truant students. The study will so help in the discovery of the fundamental aspects of truancy that is mostly found among students. With this , proper guidance and counselling will be giving to them to

enable them make the best out of education.

 1.6  Scope/Delimitation Of The Study

This study focuses on impact of truancy  on academic performance of secondary school students using public schools in Lagos State education district 1 only out of six education districts.

The major constraints of the study are fare that have posed setback

to the completion of the work. Another major limitation will be that of the

process of administrating the questionnaires since many schools will be cover and some of this school; are far apart from each other.
